CD Review by Shelley Gummeson
At first glance of the CD cover of Ukulele Heaven, it looks as though Kelly Winders is experiencing a private joy. He is, so to speak, in seventh heaven or more correctly Ukulele Heaven. With the beginning of the first song Bye Bye Blues, it is clear that nostalgia is the key Winders uses to showcase his instrument of choice.
If you’re of a certain age, your listening experience of the Ukulele may consist of flashbacks of a longhaired, hook nosed, guy singing about tulips, in a freaky falsetto voice. You have to really hand it to Kelly Winders for not shying away from recording his own version of Tiptoe Thru The Tulips and actually giving the whole tune an air of credibility. The Ukulele in his hands has a richness of sound that belies its small stature. The sixteen tracks on Ukulele Heaven are short enough to keep your interest. With the surprising addition of a kazoo and whistling, along with the vocals it does keep you smiling. After a few furtive glances around, you’ll probably find yourself singing along. If you’re into “retro with a twist” give Ukulele Heaven by Kelly Winders a listen.
